A party? Count us in! Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican and American holiday on 5th May to honour the victory over French forces. In 1862, the Battle of Puebla resulted in a military success over Napoleon III and this Mexican city became the symbol of independence. Today, the event is celebrated in the state of Puebla with parades, speeches and a feast where Molé Poblano steals the show. A spicy sauce central to Mexican cuisine, Molé Poblano is made from a mix of chillies, spices, molasses, seeds, nuts and occasionally a sprinkling of chocolate.
